What's involved in accepting new 3rd party tags?

Once a 3rd party has been approved, they're good to go indefinitely. Should the business need to use a new host or should an advertiser submit tags for a host not on the list stated above, we require a set of test tags to book and experiment with in our test environment to gauge the performance of the host and the interaction their tags have on our sites.

How long does approval take?

Every host we current allow has proactively worked with us to resolve any and all issues that crop up during testing. These experiences have always been very positive. In some cases, testing took only a couple of hours while in other cases, testing took several days. The average turn-around time is 2 days. We generally request both JavaScript and IFRAME test tags from a potential new host.

What are the tags tested for?

Tags are tested against custom ad units to verify that they do not interfere with their display such as for the Page Peel and Welcome Ad. Resolving this sort of conflict typically takes a few minutes on the 3rd party's side.

Tags are tested with other 3rd party tags as well as CMP hosted ads to ensure there is not detrimental interaction between them.

Tags are tested to gauge the speed of the 3rd party. In some cases, we require a specific type of tag from a specific 3rd party host due to the hosts connection speed and/or the speed with which the host can satisfy the call from the tag.

What type of tags do we accept?

We generally accept IFRAME and JavaScript tags from 3rd party hosts however, testing and implementation of their tags have resulted in restrictions from some vendors.

Third Party vendors need to provide clear traffic instructions for the tags including how to implement CMP tracking and cachebusting in their tags. Whenever possible please include any logins or contact information for the third party. All third party tags need to comply with CMP's advertiser specifications.

Why do advertisers use 3rd party hosts?

There are many reasons, these are some:

  • To serve Richmedia ad creative
  • To serve video ads
  • To provide a separate set of tracking metrics and/or additional detailed tracking

What types of ads need to be hosted by a 3rd party?

The following are all examples of ads that need to be hosted by a 3rd party:

  • Video ads - 3rd party hosts have a special infrastructure set up to deliver video ads due to their large file size
  • Expandable ads - 3rd party hosts systems are set up to deliver expandable frames
  • Richmedia ads - 3rd party hosts systems are designed to render animated and interactive ads
